Mister South Africa 2024, held at Vodacom World Events in Johannesburg, was a spectacular showcase of talent and innovation. The event’s bold stage and lighting design, crafted by Son Sound and Entertainment & Event Factory, broke away from traditional pageant aesthetics to deliver a dynamic, immersive experience.

A standout feature of the design was a series of LCB300’s serving as the main visual attraction. The diamond-shaped stage added to the overall aesthetic, featuring a large portrait LED screen as the focal point, with additional LED screens forming the backdrop and floor. This layout provided an immersive experience for the audience, ensuring their full engagement throughout the evening.

The lighting design was pivotal in shaping the event’s atmosphere and visual storytelling. The team achieved a perfect balance of functionality and artistic flair by utilizing a 100% BeamZ Pro rig, which included Ignite180s, Ignite300’s, MHL 1915s and LCB300 LED Bars among others.

“Our vision for the stage and lighting design was to create something fresh and unexpected, moving away from familiar layouts to deliver a bold and dynamic experience,” said Tristan Adamson, COO of Son Sound and head of technical production for Mister South Africa 2024.

Mr. B’s, a popular venue in Sydney’s Haymarket, recently underwent a significant AV upgrade to better accommodate live bands and enhance the nightclub experience. With the evolving nightlife scene and a change in ownership, the venue needed a sound system that could deliver high-quality audio across its varied spaces, including an upstairs bar and band room, and the Bolt Nightclub downstairs.

Phil Rigger from Monstereo, who was involved in the original installation, was tasked with revitalizing the venue’s sound system. After considering several options, Phil chose the Axiom Pro Audio AX800ANEO powered line array, supplied by AVE. Impressed by its midrange warmth and unique design, he installed the system in the upstairs area, which now features three AX800ANEO units per side, complemented by two Axiom SW1800A dual 18″ subwoofers. The result is a powerful sound that evenly fills the long, double-height room.

Seeing the success of the upstairs installation, Phil replicated the setup in the Bolt Nightclub, creating a robust 11,000-watt system. The lighting was also upgraded, featuring Chauvet DJ fixtures and Laserworld lasers, controlled via a ChamSys QuickQ console, enhancing the overall ambiance.

This project highlights the importance of choosing the right AV solutions to meet the specific needs of a venue, ensuring a superior audio-visual experience for both performers and patrons.

Chamsys have  just released the latest software update to the popular QuickQ consoles, opening up a huge range of possibilities to the already powerful DMX lighting range. The v8.0.1 beta see the addition of some much anticipated features as well and enhancements to exisiting functions and layouts for an even better user expereince. Software Change Notes

New Features:

  • QuickQ can now play audio files in cue stacks. The Cue Stack Window has a button which when pressed reveals the Audio File column. Clicking on that will allow an audio file to be imported onto the console that will be played when the cue is triggered.
  • An audio output VU meter has been added to the top Toolbar. Tap it to change the volume of the output or mute it. The meter will show a muted icon when the output is muted.
  • The bottom right encoder can be used to adjust intensities of selected fixtures in the Layout Window.
  • The Intensity Window now has encoders to control the Intensity and the Intensity Mode attributes. This allows control of smoke machine fans from the window. The intensity encoder is only present on consoles with encoders.
  • The Effects Window now allows control of crossfade of effects. This allows snap changes or smooth fades or anything in between, opening up a whole new range of creative possibilities.
  • The Effects Window has also gained direction controls. Effects can run backwards across a selection, from the centre out or in a random order.
  • QuickQ can now check continuously for new RDM fixtures and patch them as soon as they are connected.
  • The new RigLock feature automatically changes RDM enabled fixtures’ mode and DMX address back when they are changed.
  • The Blackout button on the console can now be used to set the speed of chases and effects. Once the settings has been enabled in the Settings Window you can hold down the Blackout button and tap a flash button or execute item to set it’s speed.
  • You can now set the timezone that the console is in. This means that scheduled events will respect Daylight Savings Time when required. The timezone can be set to UTC to keep the old behaviour. A factory reset will set the timezone back to UTC.
  • The Offline visualiser has an improved Design Mode making it easier to position fixtures and objects. Objects can easily be added, positioned, rotated and removed, while fixtures can be attached to trusses and pipes and arranged along them.

New Features:

  • The bank buttons in the Intensity Window are now tabs at the top of the window. When more then 20 fixtures are patched you can swipe right and left to move to their faders. The intensity of the fixture is displayed on the fixture select button when it is changed.
  • The buttons at the top of the Settings Window have been replaced by tabs to make it easier to explore the different groups of settings. You can switch between settings screens by swiping sideways.
  • The User Interface tab has been renamed Console.
  • The VU meters showing the incoming audio levels have been moved onto the Toolbar so it is always clear when audio is being received and played.
  • The ‘RDM Auto Patch’ option has been moved from the menu onto a button in the window.
  • There is a new RDM tab in the DMX Settings tab where the RigLock and continuous RDM scan options may be found.
  • The File Manager window now shows all files and folders. It also shows file sizes and can show the contents of USB Sticks.

Bug Fixes:

  • Selecting a group then recording to a playback without setting any attributes would cause that fader to control the intensities of the group until the console was restarted. This behaviour has now been fixed and a blank cue will be recorded instead.
  • QuickQ now resets Cue Stack rates to default when loading shows from MagicQ.
  • Items dragged too close to the edge could not be dragged back onto the screen in the Layout Window.
  • You can no longer create new empty groups.

ChamSys Expands Australian Distribution Network

Building on its growth in Australia, ChamSys has increased its presence  in that market by naming Audio Visual Engineering (AVE) as a distributor of its Quick Q line of consoles. Joining the ULA Group who continue to distribute the Quick Q console range, and exclusively the MagicQ consoles.

 

As a result of this move, ChamSys will be in an optimal position to serve the entire spectrum of the lighting console market, from mobile entertainers and users focused on small and mid-sized functions, to those working at broadcast studios and major arena tours.
